INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND

The Wildeklawer schools rugby-and netball tournament was hosted for the fi rst time in 2009 after discussions with members of the President Council of SA Rugby, Mr Hoskins, Alexander, Stofberg and Prinsloo.
The first tournament was hosted at Paarl Gymnasium from 24 April 2009 with 12 top graded rugby schools and two invitation teams. After 2009 the tournament was hosted in Pretoria, Kimberley (2011 and 2012), Maritzburg College in 2013 and 2014 and 2015 at Diamantveld in Kimberley. Kimberley again hosted the 2016 and 2017 prestigious tournament. The tournament has grown in stature to 128 teams participating in 2016 and 135 in 2017, being the biggest schools rugby and netball tournament in South Africa if not in the World.

The tournament in 2017 consisted of the following:

  • U/19 Rugby and Netball (senior tournament) | 29 April – 01 May 2017
  • U/14, 0/15 and 0/16 (junior tournament) | 29 April – 01 May 2017
  • U/13 Rugby and Netball tournament | 28 – 30 April 2017
  • U/19 Northern Cape Rugby and Netball development tournament | 27 – 30 April 2017

The main attraction of the tournament was live broadcast on Supersport of all the senior rugby games on Monday 01 May from 08h00 – 17h30.

This extremely prestigious event had a gigantic impact on the economy and tourism of Kimberley, as well as the image portrayed and impression made by Kimberley on the rest of South Africa and maybe even internationally. All guest houses, lodges and possible beds in Kimberley was fi lled as well as all the restaurants. Our tourist attractions like the Big Hole, etc. had many visitors. The economic injection into Kimberley and surrounding towns in 2017 was in excess of R55,000,000.00. This unique tournament is brought to Kimberley by Wildeklawer from the Nothern Cape to the Northern Cape.

The tournament is endorsed by SARU, SA Netball, Northern Cape Government and the Sol Plaatje Municipality, Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Northern Cape Department Economic Development and Tourism, Northern Cape Department of Education and the Northern Cape Business Chamber.

The ample opportunity that is given to not only top rugby and netball schools but also the investment in development is the corner stone of this prestigious event. Next year 2018 will be the 10th consecutive year that the tournament will be held. We are starting to prepare for this unique event!
